Thirty years ago I embarked on a project that defined my trajectory every since. Drawing on a lifelong interest in history I discovered that landscape, as painters understood it in 1990 had nothing whatsoever to do with how society organizes space in relation to the environment. Suddenly, formalist notions of pattern, color, personal expression and polemics of style, oblivious to powerful narratives shaping the terrain struck me as petty and self-indulgent. In the years that followed I discovered a handful of other painters who shared the same concerns, and a considerably larger number of conceptual and environmental artists who felt likewise. Since commencing our quarantine on March 8, Kathie has written several essays and worked on edits for two books coming out in the fall. I have been working on edits for one book while writing another that unpacks my 1990-94 journals as prose narrative. So far the manuscript is up to 275 pages. Exploring Civil War battlefields under threat from development, I sought to understand how the American landscape came to be a quarrel about what it is.
