“My starting point is always the practice of interrogative drawing, which is how visual ideas are put into writing. Some have described me as a polymath. My wife has dubbed me a topo-pictorial historiographer. I was given a name at birth and do not need another. Exploring the nexus between art, science and history, my work belongs to the tradition of expeditionary traveler-artists such as Jacques le Moyne, Frans Post, George Catlin, Seth Eastman and Frederic Church. Art-critical issues, polemics of style issues and canons of studio practice are of little concern to me. Excavating visual and written narratives from firsthand experience, travel and observation is my primary focus. ”
