    1. He did. Eastman graduated from West Point, where he studied drawing under Thomas Gimbrede. After a tour at Fort Snelling he was called back to serve as Gimbrede’s temporary replacement, following the latter’s untimely death. Eastman went on to publish the first USMA manual/textbook on topographical drawing. He was assistant drawing-master under Robert W. Weir until he was assigned as commandant of Fort Snelling, after ten years on the academy faculty. His final painting was a view of the North Gate of the Highlands from Trophy Point. It was on the easel when he died
