In 2006 the Grolier Club presented an exhibition of 19th -century drawing manuals while a few blocks away the Museum of Modern Art had opened a splashy show about the popular animation house Pixar. The work in the Pixar show consisted of drawings, sculpture and animated films. What tied these two very different shows together was the backbeat of drawing. The following essay is my effort at pairing (and comparing) these two memorable exhibitions.
