TONIGHT: TALK AT BOSCOBEL: TRAVELS, TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES OF 19TH-CENTURY ARTIST EXPEDITIONS

James Lancel McElhinney has revived the historic practice of journal-painting, unpacked as print-suite in the tradition of William Guy Wall, Jacques-Gerard Milbert, William Birch and John-James Audubon.
Tonight at Boscobel House and Garden in Garrison, New York, McElhinney will deliver a sweeping overview of this expeditionary art-form, including the tools, techniques and material culture of traveler artists.
The talk will begin promptly at 6:30 pm

Early modern explorers developed expeditionary book-painting, which were later published as prints. Created to accompany official reports, public appetite for visions of faraway places fueled a growing printing industry, which expanded the art-market from the ruling elite to a rising merchant-class, and others of more modest means.

James Lancel McElhinney will unpack this history, and the revival of expeditionary journal-painting and publishing in his own creative practice, both as art and enterprise.

Tomorrow: Journal-Painting Urban Expedition.

FIELDBOOKS TO PRINTS: EXPEDITIONARY ART. Greenwich Art Society, Wednesday October 10

“Fieldbooks to Prints, Expeditionary Art” October 10 from 5:30-6:30, at the Greenwich Art Society, 2nd floor. Attendees will learn about how artists maintain a practice of exploring the terrain through the use of fieldbooks and journals, and how these images can be expanded into print editions. Free for G.A.S. members / $20 for non-members.

Writing grew out of drawing. With the rise of civilization and expanded personal mobility, writing, drawing and painting developed portable media to accompany travelers abroad. Knowledge has always been portable, whether in clay tablets or E-readers.

Mark your calendars. October 16 Workshop announced

Greenwich Art Center is sponsoring a journal-painting workshop in northern Manhattan on October 16. This will be preceded by a lecture in Greenwich on October 10, at 5:30 pm.

After a hiatus of several years, James Lancel McElhinney is returning to teaching, with the world as his classroom. Developing a completely mobile painting practice, McElhinney has taken scenic plein-air painting to new levels. Apart from a purely visual response to terrain, light and weather, the landscape is explored in terms of history, science and environmental priorities–as an ongoing process of human intervention into the processes of nature
